School Events

Athletic Banquet

Athletic Banquet is the night when Mackenzie’s athletes shed their cleats and jerseys in favour of heels and black jackets. Over the course of the annual event, the most valuable and improved athletes from each competitive team are recognized and given awards.

Carnival Day (Spirit Week)

During Spirit Week, Mackenzie shows its Mac pride by dressing up in school colours, wearing pyjamas, and carrying furry friends around at school. While Monday to Thursday are fun, Friday is extra special. On Friday, students have an extended lunch to participate in games and activities, enjoy the bouncy castle or inflatable obstacle course, eat tasty BBQ food, and listen to great music.

Club Crawl

Club Crawl is an opportunity for Grade 9 students to learn about and sign up for the many clubs that Mackenzie has to offer. Club presidents advertise and promote their clubs in the cafeteria during second period. Any student can come in and ask questions, play games, and even win some treats and prizes. At Club Crawl, students can sign up to receive emails and updates from any of the 60+ clubs that Mackenzie has to offer.

Club Fest

Club Fest is an event with something for everyone. It is the time of year when students meet in the front foyer, gym, or cafeteria to play games, eat food, and participate in what Mackenzie clubs have to offer. Some clubs raise money for charity through their food proceeds. Students can also help contribute through contests held by the school.

Culturama

Mackenzie students come from a wide range of cultures and customs. In an attempt to share these cultures with other Mackenzie students, Culturama is celebrated each year with an evening performance and cultural food sampling. The cultural clubs at Mackenzie put on performances that consist of traditional dances and songs, and give students and teachers the opportunity to sample their incredible and diverse foods. Culturama is one of the most anticipated events of the year.

Dances

Every year, SAC hosts a number of school dances for everyone to participate in. With a different theme every time, it’s a fun time for all students!

Grade 9 Day

To welcome the Grade 9 students to high school, Mackenzie has an amazing event called Grade 9 Day! From loud music to cool team names to tug-of-war, this is always an exciting, fun-filled day. Grade 9 Day embodies Mackenzie’s sense of community and spirit. There isn’t a better way to make our new Lyons feel at home!

Java After Dark

At Java After Dark, Mackenzie’s celebrates the arts. Students are given the opportunity to express their artistic talents through monologues, videos, photography installations, and musical performances. The Arts department sets up a stage in the library and family and friends of the student performers are invited to come and view the show. Audience members are also provided with snacks, coffee, and other foods to nibble on during intermission. It’s a wonderful way to see what Mackenzie has to offer.

Mackenzie Science and Engineering Olympics

The Mackenzie Science and Engineering Olympics is an annual event hosted by Mackenzie’s Science Club (MSC), where students from various middle schools attend to compete in science-related events for prizes and glory!

Mactoberfest

Mactoberfest is the time of year where Mackenzie’s monsters and ghouls walk the halls, searching for candy to devour and fun games to participate in. Here at Mackenzie, we celebrate Halloween like no other school. SAC hosts costume contests for all of our students and teachers, our clubs sell snacks and candy for everyone to enjoy, and students create fun booths and tables in the foyer to provide loads of Halloween entertainment.

Musicals & Plays

Each year, Mac puts on either a school play or musical (alternating annually). It is a wonderful collaboration of the arts and a wonderful showcase of the students’ talents.

Pink Day

Pink hair, pink manicures, pink ribbons, pink cupcakes, and every shade of pink known to mankind is present for Pink Day @ Mac. In an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer, students are encouraged to wear pink accessories, pink clothing, or even a full-out pink ensemble. Pink Ribbon Club holds their annual homemade baked goods sale, offers pink hair spray, and pink nail polish to raise money for breast cancer research. Needless to say, students are always very excited and eager to participate in all of the Pink Day festivities.

Sounds of the Season

Sounds of the Season is Mackenzie’s annual concert held in celebration of the holidays! It is a wonderful display of skills from senior band members as well as a debut for junior band members.

Student Achievement and Citizenship Assembly

This assembly recognizes student achievement in each subject and student involvement in the community. It also awards certificates of distinction and honour for those who participated in events and competitions (such as computer science competitions, math contests, etc.).

Terry Fox Run

Every September, Mackenzie students get out of their seats and classrooms for the annual Terry Fox Run! The music is always festive and loud, and the atmosphere a welcome break from regular classes. Food is sold by SAC and Athletic Council, and money is raised for a good cause.
